"You don't have to worry about me." He pressed the button that sprang the retractable blade on his scythe, then headed for their destination with a determined stride. It took awhile, but they made it without much trouble-though they had to deal with the occasional toad.
The ruins themselves weren't terribly impressive. The one-story square buildings were crumbling with age, and mold and lichen patterned the walls more than the peeling paint did. The broken glass windows betrayed the pitch black interiors, but in his case he had a flashlight to remedy the situation.

Haru walks near Jesse while keeping an ear out for anything nearby. She could get him out of danger if it came but couldn't help him with the search. She knew nothing about this place; only that humans did live in them and now they aren't here anymore. She noticed some broken pottery, a dusty child's toy, old cooking pans, and other things humans would have. Nothing looked new or even clean, indicating well that this place has been deserted for years and years. "Can't understand why humans did live here. For once I actually wonder if they knew about the monsters that hide everywhere on this island? Were they killed by them? Or did they just leave? Wish I could leave this place. My cave may be well appointed in this corner of the island, but I grow tired of this. Always watching my back. And now I gotta watch yours too. But of course I made the choice on my own will to make the deal." Haru touches her neck mark for a moment before getting back to keeping on guard.

"I told you, you don't have to worry about me so much. I have a side career in putting demons six feet under, you know." He looked through drawers and cabinets. Any papers were too moldy and rotted to read. There was a piano in the corner, but it had collapsed long ago. "Now what have we here?" He found a rusted key in an old music box. "I wonder what this goes to." He looked around. No doors he could see even had a lock. He decided to put it in his pocket for now.

While neither were looking a scarlet long tail, slithers out under some debris and moves towards Jesse's leg. It grabs hold of his ankle and pulls hard dragging him into the tree line.

He gasped as he fell, caught off guard, but quickly reached for a scalpel. Only problem was, being dragged as he was he couldn't get a proper aim at the tail. He tried it anyway, but it only grazed the scales. Better to err on the side of missing than on the side of stabbing his own foot, but still... He reached into his pocket and drew out another one, gritting his teeth and ignoring the pain of the rocks and splinters. Whatever was attached to this tail was about to pay.

Before he could do another strike. The tail changes direction and let's go. Jesse's body flies through the air and his body hits a hard tree. Haru noticed only after the rustle sound followed by Jesse's voice. She hurries into the direction he seemed to be going. But wasn't able to get far before a scarlet body whips around and hits her in the chest. Haru was knocked off her feet by the attack. She rolls over to get back up, but the tail grabs her ankle and pulls making her fall flat on her stomach. While she was down a pair of sharp fangs bites her shoulder. Haru tries to get free, yet within seconds her muscles lock up and she can't move properly. The venom wasn't deadly, it was a paralyzing tonic. The beast add insult to injury by using its head to shove Haru's body further away. It then turns around to face its intended pray. The beast that attacked them was a monster snake. It's long body could squeeze life out of an elephant. It's scales were as bright as fire and its eyes were a basil green. They were capable of immobilizing any that stared.

The impact of hitting the tree knocked the wind out of him and hurt like heck, but he was back up in the next few seconds. If Jesse were anyone else, he might have shouted something like "Haru!" But that would call the snake's attention to him. Instead, he reached into his pocket for the cylinder and clicked a button. The blade of the scythe sprang out as he ran toward the beast, and he plunged it into it's flesh in the next instant. It would have cut right through a normal snake, but whatever came from this forest was far removed from "normal". Still, he'd managed to do some serious damage, and with a grunt he pulled out the scythe and prepared to do more.

The wound was shallow but it still hurt. The demon snake whips around its tail and knocks over a nearby tree. The tree fall over towards where Jesse was standing. Again it whips its tail so Jesse when he dodged would run into it and knocks him down flat. The snake was strong and could see this human was nimble. Yet just one look at its eyes and he'll be unable to move as long as they had contact.

He dashed to get back on his feet before the next attack, not wanting to share the same fate as Haru. A quick glance at her stiff muscles and bite marks was all he needed to know. He had to get her out of the way somehow, considering this thing was able to knock down trees. He took two scalpels and threw them at the snake's eyes, but as he glanced at them the strangest feeling crept over him. For a brief instant, they were all he could focus on, and time lost all meaning. The next moment, however, the snake turned to dodge the instruments and the spell was broken. He shook it off and gripped his scythe, this time slashing in a wide arc across it's back.

The py-on hisssed angerly at Jesse. It's tail comes up and manages another strike on Jesse's back. 'Scratch my back, I break you'rs,' it thought. It then squirms to throw Jesse off it. It again tries to capture his eyes.

The blow made him realize he needed to fight smarter, not harder. He dashed into the trees. He knew it could climb better than he could so he stuck to the ground. It would be harder for it to strike with it's tail in an arc with the trees blocking the way, and since it'd have to follow him he could attack as soon as it emerged instead of trying to fight out in the open. It was risky, and Haru wouldn't be able to fight alongside him. But she was out of commission anyway, and he had to distract it from her. Though he found it strange that it didn't finish her off when it could have... Ah, there it is. He threw a scalpel it it's forehead, forcing it to turn away. He took advantage of the distraction and hacked at it with his scythe; this time pulling away almost immediately and dashing back into the trees. He'd fought dirty plenty of times before, and he'd do it again.

The Py-on was getting really angry. It was looking to catch both prey, but this one was being worst out of all she had eaten. It woulds weren't too severe except for a deep on on its back from his last attack. 'All right that does it.' she thought. If this human wants to live so badly she'll let him go however... The giant py-on slithers to the gargoyle on the ground still paralyzed from her bite. 'I'll take the bat hybrid,' Haru's whole middle section was in the Py-on's mouth. The fangs were poking her skin to the point of irritating yet didn't break skin. Haru still couldn't move, her arms and wings fall limp to the ground. The demon snake then swipes her tail behind her to knock down another tree. With luck it might fall on the human and he can pay for the injuries he inflicted. The ground shook and dust flew as the tree crashed down. It did miss the human and gave the py-on the chance to leave with its catch.

He cursed his luck. It was acting very strangely indeed: first neglecting Haru when she was at her weakest, then changing it's course and taking her away. Was it baiting him? Did it have that kind of intelligence? He shouldn't put it past anything in this forest. He briefly cleaned his own wounds, doing the bare minimum so he could pursue it quickly but not bleed out on the way. There was a trail of it's blood he could follow, and if that disappeared, he'd resort to other tracking methods.
The mark on his neck began to ache. He was already going to rescue Haru, but the pact made it clear he didn't have a choice in the matter.

The py-on takes Haru to it's layer, a cave on the ground hidden by some fallen over trees. It opens it mouth and Haru was ruffly dropped to the ground like dropping a stone. Haru groaned in pain. As she laid there she notices she could wiggle her fingers again, the venom was beginning to wear off. As long as it doesn't bite her again. Haru was well aware of the dangers from a py-on. They hunt like a normal small snake, bite and squeeze their prey to make them unable to fight anymore and when they are as helpless as a air drowned fish, they swallow them. Sometimes the prey is still barely alive when it happens. The real advantage they had were their eyes, one look as you just can't look away. To avoid the risk, even though she still couldn't move her neck Haru kept her eyes looking to the ground. She heard the sound of dirt being scuffed around. What was the beast doing? From behind while its prey was still immobilized, the py-on rolls on it's back rubbing dirt into the wound on its back as if it use that to stop the bleeding. "That human. Would have been a fine delicacy but it refused to submit." The py-on squabbled. "Should I ever see him again I'll crush him till every bone is broken. But for now I'm hungry." She comes over to the gargoyal laying on the ground. She licks his slimy tongue on Haru's cheek all the way up her head. It disgusted Haru, but she does what she can to make it look like the poison hasn't loosened on her in the slightest. If she can get more movement in her body she may be able to fight. Snakes have fangs and strength, but she can fly and cut deep with her razor sharp talons. But it may need to come sooner, as she felt scales slipping under her waist and wrapping around her body. It's getting ready to squeeze her!
