"But Mini, Conforums is dead. Anything not saved or backed up from there is gone forever."
FRIENDS! ROMANS! COUNTRYMEN! LEND ME YOUR EARS!
There exists many ways to retrieve information from "dead" websites. There are these wonderful things called cached websites. Both Google and Bing have the ability to show you a website's cached form, which (and I am no techno guru so apologies if this isn't 100% accurate) is basically a temporary-ish dump of all of the important bits of a website as it was last saved. There are also places that specifically exist to archive websites - show us what they looked like last week, last month, or last year. Or heck, even 10 years ago.
I realized I didn't save ANY of my OC profiles, and as we all know, the Doom Date has come and gone. Using the Way Back Machine (http://archive.org/web/web.php) I was able to load a fairly recent-ish saved version of the old Kainakaa, but the links to specific posts and pages hadn't been updated. I could see the link to my OC page updated sometime in March of 2017, but it wouldn't load at all. So... close, but not really.
Google has the ability to show you the cached version of a site. I was able to use the Way Back Machine to find a link to a specific page I was trying to find from Kainakaa, then I just googled that link specifically. Ever notice the little down-pointing arrow at the end of a link Google gives you? If you click on it, it gives you the option to view a cached page. I thought for sure that this would work.
Nope.
I was about to despair and give up hope, but then on a whim used Bing instead. I took the link to my OC page and stuck it into Bing...
Lo and behold.
So if you're despairing about having lost access to something, worry not. At least for now, there is still a way to find it.
If anyone needs help with this process, please let me know. I'll be happy to do whatever I can to help.
