thought i'd start a new thread since i didn't see anything in the archives. or it's too old and might be worth starting a new one....
anyway, does anybody here own a pet snake? or any reptile/amphibian, for that matter?
i have a corn snake at the moment, who is one and a half years old (2 years old in May/June). i wanted one since i was little, but my mom wouldn't let me because she hates snakes. i had a cat since college (still have him) but otherwise didn't have any pets. partly, i was worried that the cat might try to get into the cage and attack the snake.
but after putting together a bio-active enclosure over the summer, i decided i'd finally get one and i brought home a baby corn snake in september 2021. i figured, i'm a successful, working adult with a mortgage of my own to pay, if not now, then when? my parents weren't thrilled by the idea, but they respectfully realized they couldn't stop me either.
funnily enough, between my mom, my dad and my sister, my mom actually liked the corn snake the most, when i first showed them. he was still real little, of course, and basically everything is cute when it's a baby, but i was still shocked and happy about that. my cat also pretty much ignores the tank. it's just another piece of extra-tall furniture and he's never even tried to jump on it. some days, i'm not fully sure if he even realizes there's something alive in there.
i'm thinking of getting more things in the future. building the tank was fun, it looks pretty, and growing live plants instead of filling it with fake ones is satisfying too. i'd love to get dart frogs and some kind of tree-frog.....and maybe a box turtle......and a pixie frog strictly so i can name him Jabba.....
i'm thinking of getting a garter snake as well, since i've seen some with absolutely beautiful patterns, but that might be it for pet snakes. i don't get my corn snake out all the time, but he's REALLY easy to care for and i love having him. just one of those things i've wanted to do since i was a kid and i FINALLY did it.
anybody else?

Well. I personally dont own a snake unfortunately. My dad is terrified of them. A couple of my friends in my area did though. I was always so jelous. One of them had 2 balled pythons. The other friend has an albino python whifh i think is fairly rare to have one

but i didn't realize just how popular ball pythons were as pet reptiles until i started looking for my corn snake. they're basically the top two types of pet snakes out there.

I’m a bit against the idea on the grounds of my opposition to the exotic pet trade and the damage invasive species can do when let loose.

I’m a bit against the idea on the grounds of my opposition to the exotic pet trade and the damage invasive species can do when let loose. yeah, there are plenty of problems with the exotic pet industry. though i do think it's gotten a LOT better since i was a kid. regular internet access means abundant access to care guides, rather than just taking the word of the pet store owner as your only guide, leading to better care for the animal.
it's also much easier to contact a breeder and get a captive-bred animal rather than intentionally or unintentionally supporting people who sell wild-caught animals. captive-bred ones are more expensive, but they live longer, are easier to care for, are much better adjusted to living with humans, and getting one, of course, doesn't impact the wild population at all. every care guide i've ever seen has said to always get a captive-bred animal.
invasive species is trickier, though. a lot of the times, there's just no way to predict what will or will not be an invasive species. i can say that my corn snake is native to the US, but not my particular area of it, since i'm too far north of their usual range. it's unlikely that it would survive the winter, IF it got out.
but i know burmese pythons are a big problem in the everglades as an invasive species (which likely escaped captivity after hurricane damage) and Australia outright bans anything that isn't native to Australia. so, there's all sorts of laws and restrictions involved, too.

Well, that's all well and good. But I wouldn't want one, anyway. Besides, I prefer cats and dogs.
