Mira coughed out another mouthful of seawater. Her body was shaking rather impressively, and she was grateful for the warmth coming from Meissa's body. She wrapped her own arms around Meissa as she fought back tears. That was twice in twenty-four hours now she had nearly drowned. The ocean was a terrifying place to her. Kyubey had said her powers came from the sea or something like that, hadn't he? But what if she was so petrified of the sea she could never go back out in it again?
"Esa pequeña bola de cabello está tramando algo. Esta fue la idea de esa cosa. Y esa psicópata chica mágica que apareció... Tch. No hay manera en el infierno de que nada de esto sea una coincidencia," Maaz muttered under her breath, crossing her arms across her chest as she glared out across the bay.
Mira blinked. That was the most Spanish she had ever heard in her life! And she understood absolutely none of it. Gulping a little apprehensively, as Maaz looked angry enough to kill, she attempted to speak. Her voice was thin, wavering, and hoarse from all the screaming she had done as she had gotten closer to the shore. It took a few tries to find her voice. "Um... M-Miss... M-M-Maaz?" she whispered.
Maaz somehow heard her, for she tore her eyes away from the ship and glanced down at Mira and Meissa. What a sight they were. Mira looked like she was the ghost of some poor young woman lost at sea, and Meissa was starting to become nearly soaked head to toe just from how tightly she was hugging the other girl.
"Hrmm?" Maaz responded, then seemed to realize that she had been muttering aloud in her native tongue. Grumbling in annoyance, she waved a hand down at her. "Oh, never you mind any of that. What do I want to know is what in los siete círculos del Infierno made you jump overboard and try to swim all the way to shore, eh?"
Mira trembled. "I... I... I d-didn't mean to d-d-disob-bey orders, b-b-but... w-well, K-Kyubey--"
"I KNEW IT!" Maaz roared, making Mira squeak in alarm and bury her head against Meissa's chest. "Oooooh, when I get my hands on that bolsa de pulgas I swear I-- Oi! Meissa! Take the new girl inside and get her a change of clothes, aye? And make sure everything else is... thawed out, yeah? I... Well, let us just say that I need to have a meeting with our así llamado protector y guía," Maaz said, cracking her knuckles as, grinning like a madwoman, she stomped off up the deck and headed towards town.

Meissa held on to the sputtering Mira tightly, fearing that if she let go of her for the slightest second she’d go tumbling back into the sea. She could feel the new girl’s body quaking something terrible against her, and slowly dragged her away from the dock, listening to her cough and sob. It was strange, Meissa thought, that a girl with no love for the sea, no ability to swim, a girl who Meissa only seemed to spot when she was on the brink of drowning, had abilities so closely tied to the water. It was something she hadn’t really thought about, and she resolved to ask Kyubey about it, when she next spotted that little devil.
A cacophony of Spanish Meissa understood only in tone informed her that Maaz was, at the very least, not worried that Mira was in any imminent danger, and, although Meissa shot her an admonitory glance, it did relax her somewhat to know that the older girl was calm. Gently, she eased her tight hold on Mira, as she stuttered out a reply to Maaz about Kyubey. Maaz’s fiery response drew a nervous yelp from Mira, who pressed herself fearfully to Meissa, who let out a little giggle, patting her head, turning to see Maaz already making her way towards the city.
“Come on, Mira, let’s get you into something dry,” she cooed, helping the girl, several pounds heavier thanks to her saturated clothes, up to her feet, and leading the way towards the sanctuary. The door swung open for them, and she gently released Mira, gazing down the length of the large entrance hall where, what seemed like an eternity ago, she and Maaz had stood off against that creepy, red eyed girl. Although there was still something of a chill to the air inside, the clouds of fog were gone, as was most of the ice, though there was still a bit of icy frost that clung to some of the walls. Meissa leaned down to examine it, gently tapping against the wall with a finger, cold to the touch, but melting against the slightest warmth. “Looks like she’s long gone,” Meissa murmured to no one in particular, before rising, and looking back at Mira. “We should find you-oh!”
Half way through her sentence another thought popped into Meissa’s head, and, with a grand sweep of an arm, she gestured to the wide floor before them. “Welcome to our sanctuary!” Light streamed in from high, narrow windows across several scattered, somewhat dusty chairs and low tables. A number of large boxes rested against the walls, brimming with a strange assortment of items, long wilted flowers, smooth, round stones, and the occasional sparkling gem. Despite seeming like a small, rather shabby building on the outside, it seemed to be quite a wide room, if still rather shabby. “It’s um...not exactly all the much, but...it’s safe.” Meissa gave Mira a soothing smile, before sliding open one of the many doors that lined the hall, to reveal a closet with a ragged collection of various faded dresses. She let out a nervous laugh, before rifling through them, trying to find something nice for Mira to wear.

((*blows the dust off of this story*))
Mira fixed Maaz with a very baffled and bewildered look as the older girl yelled something exotic and foreign sounding before stomping off up the deck, quickly disappearing behind stacked boxes, pyramids of barrels, overturned crates, and piles of empty nets. She hadn't had much time to notice their surroundings before this, but it would appear as if this dock wasn't anywhere near as busy as the docks far across the sea, back home.
Home.
The thought caused a lump to swell in her throat and hot tears to sting in her eyes. Her thoughts of home were of a home she would never return to, parents she would never see again. Before she could dwell too much on the thought, however, Meissa was patting her head saying something about dry clothes. Meissa pulled her up to her feet, thankfully not letting go of her hands. Mira felt a smile twitch across her face. She was much sweeter than that other angry girl. The two of them walked (well, Meissa walked - Mira stumbled along on unsteady legs) away from the city. Mira wondered where they were going, but seeing as she knew nothing at all about where they were, she remained mostly quiet.
"Umm, M-Meissa, wh-what did Maaz mean when she said m-make sure everything was th-th-thawed out?" Mira asked through chattering teeth. A cold shiver ran down her back as they entered what looked like a fairly small shack that had been hastily constructed and weathered several strong storms. Was this dilapidated shack really where the two girls lived?
"Looks like who is..." Before she could say much else, the door swung open to reveal an interior that in no way matched the exterior. Mira gasped as she saw the giant room, easily the size of a royal ballroom, filled with treasures and trinkets. Chairs, tables, and other bits of furniture were tucked into corners or set out in what looked to be like just the right place. The back of the room opened up into a long hallway with doors to either side. Mira gasped, tears stinging her eyes once again as she was overcome by emotion. Sanctuary. A safe place. A safe place that could maybe, just maybe, be her new home. "Oh Meissa, it's... it's beautiful. All of this. It's just... It's perfect." She sniffled, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hands. "Oh, gosh, I'm sorry. I'm such a mess. Literally," she said, noticing for the first time that a piece of seaweed was stuck to her shoulder. "I, um... I... w-well, I guess the first thing I should do is get changed. Is there any place in particular I can do that?"
Just then, her stomach rumbled very loudly. Mira looked embarrassed. "... Maybe, um, maybe we could have something to eat, too?" she added sheepishly.

Meissa flitted by the closet a while longer, before giving up. Nothing seemed quite the right size for Mira and moreover the clothes in that closet all seemed quite old. Not only were they most unfashionable, they were also caked with a thick layer of dust that was the last thing the still soaked Mira needed. A thought occurred to Meissa and she raised an eyebrow, slowly drawing nearer to the new girl, a curious, almost mischievous smile on her face. At the reminder of her recent meeting with the bizarre pale girl, the smile blanched. “Oh, someone...someone was here,” she said, quietly. “That’s never happened before, in all my time here.” She paused again, gazing past Mira, a nostalgic, faraway look on her face. “Though...I suppose I haven’t been here very long myself. A few months? Maybe a year? It feels like it’s been so long,” she said, her voice growing quiet. When one spent most days at sea fighting monsters in labyrinths, it was hard to keep track of time. “Um, anyway, she sort of froze the whole place and ran off. Maaz has gone off to make sure she’s well and truly gone.” Meissa gave Mira a reassuring smile. “Which I’m sure she is.”
At the sound of a sniffle, Meissa leaned in slightly closer, nodding slightly. She could relate to Mira’s feelings on some level. She had lost her family too, had been introduced to witches, had made the contract. They all had. Mira, however, was uniquely unfortunate in having gone through every single one of those traumatic moments in a single horrific encounter. Meissa pulled her in closer, wrapping her arms around Mira in a warm hug. She flinched slightly at the clammy cold of her dripping clothes, but held her tight nevertheless.
After a few long seconds Meissa pulled away, gently tugged the long, curled strand of seaweed from Mira’s shoulder as she did so. “Now, I want to try something. I’m not sure if it will work, but,” she said, more to herself to Mira, gazing past Mira, making sure there was nothing fragile or breakable behind her, before taking a step back and winding up with an arm, as if she was about to throw a punch at her. She kept her hand open, however, and, with one swift motion, brought it swinging directly towards Mira’s face, coming to a rapid stop only a few inches from hitting her outright. As her hand swung forwards, however, it was accompanied by a blast of warm hair that hit right across Mira’s drenched body, drying it somewhat, albeit in a very clumsy way. Meissa grinned, wiping a hand across Mira’s shoulders in an attempt to gauge how successful she’d been. “Well, it’s a...a start.”
At the reference of a place Meissa brightened up still more, gesturing up one of the corridors. “As for a place to change, your room will be the first room on that hallway. It always is.”

Mira's eyes widened as Meissa casually mentioned that someone had just shown up and frozen their entire home over. Was that normal?? From the way Meissa continued speaking, it didn't sound like it. What kind of strange life had she stumbled into? Perhaps it would have just been better if she...
NO. That was dangerous thinking. She shook her head and did her best to banish the dark thought from her mind. She had only been half paying attention to what Mira was saying and was about to thank her for pulling some of the seaweed off of her when she looked up and found that Meissa had taken a step backwards and looked as if she was going to throw a punch right at her face. Alarmed by this change, Mira stumbled backwards a bit. "Um, um, Meissa, wh-what exactly are you doAAAAAH!"
Meissa's arm came swinging forward fast enough to have sent her flying backwards into the ocean. Luckily, Meissa stopped about an inch from Mira's nose. Her eardrums popped as a large blast of warm air slammed into her. It was strong enough to nearly scoop her up off the ground for a moment. Her clothing fluttered around her like mad, and she squeaked as she did her best to not wind up in an embarrassing situation. Her hair went flying straight up in the air, and when the blast of warm air dissipated, her hair remained right where it was.
"... Ummm... Thanks?" Mira said, blinking several times as Meissa patted her now-just-slightly-damp shoulder. "A little warning would have maybe been nice," she added, a hint of a smile flickering across her face. "Oh, my room? My room?? I-I really can have my own room?" she asked, feeling tears prickle in her eyes. "Thank you, Meissa. Really. I mean that. I don't think I can ever thank you and Maaz enough. I'm going to go get changed, do something with my hair, and then, um, I guess then I'll come find you and we can get something to eat?"
~*~
Meanwhile, Maaz had made her way through the docks that lined their small, quiet port village. She walked past a wide assortment of fishermen, farmers, soldiers, and merchants who were all much too busy to notice a rough, dirty, scruff-muffin like her. Having shifted back out of her magical girl transformation, she blended right in with the "other" kind of crowd. As such, nobody noticed as she ducked down a dark alleyway and climbed up an ancient looking ladder, hoisting herself up onto the thatched roof of a vacant building. She folder her arms as she peered around.
"Oi! Kyubey! I want answers and I want them rápido."

Meissa flinched, stepping hastily back as Mira yelped as the surprise blast of air shot past her, her hair exploding out, and remaining floofed out like that. It was a rather comical expression, but Meissa remained silent as Mira recovered from the shock of the magical assault. How would she react? Mira had been the quiet type so far, and yet...Meissa hadn’t really spent all that much time with the girl. She wasn’t sure how she’d react to magic that wasn’t directly saving her life.
The new girl smiled slightly, and Meissa beamed, relieved. She nodded, and gestured behind her, where a long hallway extended, lined with near identical slim wooden doors. “Of course! Everyone gets a room the moment they cross the threshold.” She gave Mira another pat on the shoulder. “Of course Mira. Magical Girls are family to each other. The only family we have, now.” She sighed, her gaze shifting past Mira, to where that mysterious girl had vanished. She didn’t know her, had never seen anyone like her, but...if she did know of this place...she was family, same as Maaz and Mira. Their duties were the same, their fight the same. “Of course! We’ll go into town to get some supplies this afternoon,” she said, leading her to the newest of the doors. “Take your time, though, there’s no worry. And...it might take a bit of time to fix that hair, sorry,” she said, with an apologetic giggle.
The ghostly white of Kyubey’s body could not have clashed more drastically from the idyllic tropical landscape of the village. Red eyes scanned the town below, the soft greens of palm trees, the peaceful crash of waves against the shore, on its constant search. It paused however, tail flickering energetically, at Maaz’s call, head turning curiously. The red eyes gazed into Maaz’s, calculating, always calculating. “Maaz Montilla. I would have thought you would want to spend more time with your comrades in the Sanctuary. Your newest ally seemed to me to be in a rather delicate situation,” it said quietly. Kyubey gazed at her for a little longer, before turning back to the street, seemingly unconcerned with the enraged Maaz just behind him.

Mira glanced upwards towards her hair and for once was glad that she didn't currently have access to a mirror. Meissa meant well, she knew that. In the short time that she had spent with her, she could already tell that she was a good person. Maaz, on the other hand... well, time would tell with the other, older girl. As Meissa gave her a soft little pat on the shoulder and casually remarked that all magical girls were family, Mira felt something catch in her throat. As Meissa moved away from her, Mira caught her hand for just a moment.
"... The only family... does that mean..."
Mira felt a cold wave wash over her insides as she locked eyes with Meissa. She forced a smile on her face, gave her hand a squeeze, then simply nodded to her new friend. "I, um... Y-Yeah. Right. I better go and change. I guess dinner won't make itself."
She pulled away from Meissa and headed off in the direction of where her room was supposed to be. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she found the door. There was nothing all that remarkable about it, so what was this apprehension she was suddenly feeling? Was it just fear of the unknown? Was it the events of the day finally catching up with her? Was it that last thing Meissa had said, where she had implied without actually saying what Mira was beginning to suspect was true for all three of them?
No. She couldn't focus on that right now. If she stopped to think, then she would start to relive everything that had happened earlier in the day. Right now, she needed to focus on something small. Something tangible. Something she could handle. Something she could do. What could she do? She could open the door, find a new outfit, and get ready to go into town to find some food. That was something she could do. That was an easy task she could do. One step in front of the other. All she had to do was open the door. Easy peasy.
Mira's clammy hands slipped over the doorknob, twisted it, and pushed the door open. It squeaked softly as it swung open. As the door opened fully, Mira gasped out loud. Her hands trembled uncontrollably. She subconsciously bit down hard on her bottom, quivering lip. Hot tears stung in her eyes. Another cold wave hit her hard enough to drop her to her knees.
"I... I don't... I d-don't understand..."
~*~
A sound reminiscent of an angry jackal came snarling out of Maaz as Kyubey started plodding up the street, seemingly happy as a clam. That stupid little smile always looked so out of place. What she wouldn't give to slap the smile right off of him.
"'Oi! I was talking to you, fleabag!" Maaz shouted, jumping off of the platform she had climbed atop her. She slid down a thatched roof and landed on the ground with a loud crash and a flurry of loose pieces of hay and straw. "What exactly do you mean by that? Delicate? Are you tellin' me we gots us a broken magical girl or something?" she demanded. "Wait, wait, stop distracting me. That new kid has nothing to do with why I came looking for you. What do you know about some chica de hielo súper loco who cam busting into Sanctuary ready to kill us all, huh?? Wait, I take that back. I mean, no, that is important, but the new girl IS why I came. Where the hell do you get off telling her to jump into the ocean and swim clear to shore?! ¿Parece un estúpido delfín?"

Kyubey stopped at the crash of his pursuer smashing into what had once been a bale of high, his expression still that unchanging polite smile. He paused for her to recover, as her bilingual onslaught rang out through the town, his calm unwavering.
“Ah, habla de la extraña en el santuario,” he said, eyes gleaming up at her, shifting effortlessly into Maaz’s mother tongue. “Sí, la conocemos. Ella es como ustedes. Una chica mágica, aunque con más experiencia, sin duda. No se preocupe por Alioth. Si ella quisiera, ya estarías muerta,” he said, with a calmness that few could have when talking about how easy the person you were talking to could have been killed. “Una vez tuve grandes esperanzas en ella,” he admitted, voice trailing off for a moment, though his eyes did not leave Maaz’s face. “Su lote fue… decepcionante.” He hopped atop a stone wall casually, turning to fix his eyes on Maaz, his red orb-like eyes shining, now at level with her.
“Como para Mira, ciertamente no le dije que se lanzara al mar. Simplemente le expliqué la situación en la que usted y Meissa estaban con ella. Es decir,” he paused, his words slowing, as if explaining the blindingly obvious. “En sobre sus cabezas con respecto a ella.” And with that, the small creature leapt down from his perch on the wall, disappearing from view.

Maaz, never one for patience, stood tapping her foot in quite the aggravated manner as Kyubey plopped his smug self down not too far away from where she had landed and proceeded to go on, keeping up his impeccably perfect español. It bothered her in a way she couldn't bring to words that the magical creature could so easily switch between languages. Was it really such a far-fetched thought that a being that could grant any wish conceivable was versed in more than one language?
A cold shiver ran down her back as Kyubey went on to explain that she needn't fear this new, veteran magical girl, Alioth, because if she had wanted to kill all three of them... she would have. Maaz had heard rumors of magical girls on other islands who fought off others, but magical girls killing other magical girls? Was that really something she should be concerned with? The ice user had attacked them completely unprompted in their home. Why? What was there to gain from such a thing? She tried not to let Kyubey's words phase her, instead choosing to feign boredom by rolling her eyes at the remark and waving a dismissive hand in the air.
"Tch. Do not be so quick to dismiss Meissa and myself, pequeño blanco. Meissa has really come into her own these last few voyages. She gets stronger with every battle. If this... Alioth, you called her, yes?" she said, stumbling over the foreign name. "If dama princesa de hielo wants to cause problems, then she shall quickly find herself at the long end of my barrels," she said cooly, instinctively reaching down to where her twin flintocks rested when she transformed. The guns, of course, weren't on her for obvious reasons now, but they were only a magical thought away.
Kyubey went on to feign innocence in the matter of convincing the new girl to nearly drown herself earlier in the day. Of course. When he slowed down the pace of his talking and used overly simplified words for her, Maaz gritted her teeth together and, in a flurry of green sparkles, grabbed at the holster that magically materialized at her waist and shot at the section of wall just below Kyubey. She didn't shoot at him, per se, but it was awfully close. She swore after him as he scampered off the wall and vanished into nothing again.
"I swear, one of these days," she grumbled as she twirled her gun around on her finger before slipping it back into its holster. With a wave of her hand, her guns vanished into a flurry of sparkles just as fast as they had materialized. "No use getting worked up about it. Might as well grab some dinner before headed back. Oh. Guess I should get more dinner than usual," she mused aloud as she wandered further down the alleyway she had jumped down into.
Standing at the end of a section of the alley that forked off in two directions, one that headed back into town and the other that turned off and ventured closer to an old prison building, stood a young woman with a vacant expression on her face. She wore a maid outfit, which signified her as someone who likely served one of the nobles who lived on the upper side of the island. What in the world was she doing here? Maaz slowed down, curious to see what the woman was doing. Maaz just happened to glance down towards the path and saw tendrils of mist snaking around the woman's feet. They seemed to be coming from the path that led towards the old prison building.
"Miss? Excuse me, miss? You lost?" Maaz called out, giving her a friendly smile.
The woman stared straight past Maaz, her unblinking eyes glazed over in a horrifying manner. Maaz gasped as she caught sight of a small, red glowing mark on the woman's neck - a Witch's Kiss?!
Maaz cursed under her breath. She closed her eyes and reached out her senses for Meissa's magical signature. Meissa! I have eyes on a maid with a Witch's Kiss on her neck. She has not yet moved, but she is standing on the path that leads to the old prison building. Grab the new girl and meet me so we can see what the situation is.

Meissa was still back on the island of the Sanctuary. Having showed Mira to her room, Meissa had returned to the main entrance chamber, and crumpled onto one of the thick, squashy couches in the entrance room. She let out a gasp of pleasant surprise as she sank into the seat; Alioth had gone and most of her ice had too, but there was still a chill to the furniture that, in the humid heat of a Caribbean morning, was transcendent. Meissa’s eyes slid shut, and she nuzzled eagerly into the cool chair, letting out a long sigh as she lounged. Operating Constellation was a curious magical endeavor. It wasn’t especially taxing, not like Maaz letting loose with her magical flintlocks, but...it was a slow, steady drain. Meissa never realized it until moments like this, when the ship was unmoored from her subconscious, how exhausting it was to keep it going all over the sea. She let out a sigh, rolling over in the chair so that her cheek could rest on a slightly cooler spot on the icy couch. She could feel sleep coming on, and a slight smile crossed her lips at the prospect. Just a few hours...that was all she needed...just a little nap to tide her over…
MEISSA!
Meissa was jolted out of her momentary lapse into slumber with an instinctual “Yes Captain!” She rolled to her feet, or at least tried to. Her feet were comfortably resting on a nearby couch, and did not much feel like being rolled to. Meissa went crashing down to the wooden floor with a loud crash, and the lovely sleepiness that had been only seconds from overtaking her vanished in a puff of humid air. She groaned, and dragged herself onto her feet, blinking back tears of pain. Maaz, she psychically whined. Still, she straightened a bit as the rest of Maaz’s message came through. a Witch in the old town was serious business, it was the busiest spot on the entire island, which meant casualties could be very high if it wasn’t snuffed out as quickly as possible. Message received! she sent back to Maaz. I’ll go get her, I’ll be there as quick as I can! Be careful. Meissa was halfway through sending Mira a message before remembering that she was new to this. Not feeling like this emergency was the best time to explain the situation to her, she walked down the hall to find the newbie.
A moment after Meissa’s message had come through, another voice came to Maaz’s head, one that was definitely not Meissa, or even Mira. It was deep, and quite melodious. I am just past the old prison gate. Looks like a labyrinth entrance is just through here. Wait for your friends, if you’d like, and join me, ma sœur.

Mira's bedroom door was closed, but not locked. However, should Meissa try and open the door, she would find that something on the other side was seemingly preventing it from opening.
Inside, Mira was sitting on the floor with her back pushed up against the door. She was hugging her knees very close to her chest and simply starting at the room that couldn't possibly exist in front of her. There was something very wrong going on here, of that she was certain. Was she in another one of those scary places from before? A labyrinth? Maybe Mira should use her magical powers and transform? But there weren't any scary monsters for her to fight, so what good would transforming do? Fear paralyzed her for the time being. She decided that she would simply stay right where she was until somebody came and rescued her. That's what you were supposed to do when you were lost, right? Mira was very lost right now... but was anybody even looking for her?
~*~
Maaz rolled her eyes as Meissa whined at her. She could almost picture her first mate having been sound asleep, snug as a bug in a rug and then promptly being jolted wide awake at the summons. There was no rest for the weary, the old saying went.
We may be early to the hunt. I have yet to see anyone else around. I will just follow this lady and make sure to keep her out of the labyrinth for now. Worry not, my friend. I am not exactly itching for my third fight in one day, Maaz replied with a hearty chuckle.
Just as she was about to think that this would be a relatively easy time, two things happened at once. First, Maaz glanced back up and noticed that the bewitched maid was already halfway down the path towards the prison. "Speedy little devil," Maaz growled under her breath. Just as she was about to sprint off after her, the second thing happened - a strange magical girl's voice echoed in Maaz's head. Maaz stopped dead in her tracks. Was it Alioth the ice user?! No, this girl's voice and magic were vastly different. Her voice was low and confident. She sounded older, maybe closer to Maaz's age, or possibly even older.
While the prospect of a possible veteran magical girl could be exciting, Maaz only had one thought: ANOTHER new magical girl, here on their island?! What in the world was going on?!
If you are already at the entrance, chica nueva, might as well wait a moment. No need to dive in alone, Maaz called out to the new girl, deciding that she would play friendly and hope that this encounter ended much better than the one with Alioth had gone.
Meissa! Maaz called again. Another magical girl is on site! She says the labyrinth is just past the prison gate. Sounds friendly enough but I do not yet have a visual. Chop chop, hermana!

Still clutching her head, Meissa made her way towards Mira’s room. She took the handle and pushed..only to immediately feel resistance of some weight against it. She paused, wondering why the newbie might have blockaded her bedroom, before tapping a faint tone on the door. “Mira?” She called, before quieting slightly. “I just got word from Maaz, we…we need to go, there’s another witch,” she said, leaning against the wall beside Mira’s unmoving door. “It’s…we usually have more time to rest here, I promise, but…but Maaz needs us,” she said cautiously, feeling both apologetic and urgent. She knew Maaz well enough to know that, if the situation got dire enough, there was a very good chance she would not wait for reinforcements, and would readily dive in to face what was surely a powerful and dangerous witch all alone. And that was, especially after their last encounter with a witch, the last thing Meissa wanted to think about.
Meissa flinched again as Maaz’s shout blasted again through her head, covering her ears as if that could quiet the noisy magical girl. Still, she perked up at Maaz’s news. She wasn’t alone, which was very good news. She hoped the cooler head (and even without knowing this mystery woman, Meissa was quite certain that she would be a cooler head than Maaz) would keep Maaz out of danger.
It occurred to Meissa a moment later that Maaz wasn’t exactly on the best terms with all magical girls. She had just gotten into a fight with another girl in the Sanctuary itself just a few moments ago. But still, a witch was every magical girl’s priority. It was their duty, and surely that surpassed any petty rivalry the girls themselves might have. Meissa only hoped that Maaz wouldn’t start anything with her.
~~~
The glassy-eyed woman made her way forwards in staggering steps and faintly too-long strides, but was blocked a moment later by another girl, coming up from the path. She took the woman by the shoulders and leaned in close to her. There was a faint red flash from between the two, and a moment later the woman was scampering back the way she had come, right past Maaz. The other woman followed quietly in her wake, her silver eyes gazing determinedly at Maaz.
She was old, for a magical girl, a couple years older than Maaz, and taller too, with dark skin and long curly hair, black save one white lock that dangled by her ear. Her dress was plain, unremarkable, save the gleaming blood-red gem that hung from a silver necklace: what Maaz could easily recognize as a soul gem, although instead of the usual golden pattern around it the gem was clutched in the legs of the metallic legs of a decorative black spider.
The mystery magical girl came to a halt right in front of Maaz. She was silent for a few moments, studying her face, before extending a hand to her. “Marie Félicité. Enchantée,” she said, politely. “We should perhaps talk strategy?”
Mira jumped when she both heard and felt the door move behind her. She jumped back onto her feet, hand rushing to the other side of the handle. It was Meissa! Thank goodness, she WASN'T in one of those horrifying places they had gotten trapped in earlier. Gulping, she slowly turned around and once again looked at the impossible room behind her. Meissa was speaking, but Mira wasn't quite paying attention. A hundred different thoughts were running through her head all at once. How was her room here? If she was here, would she walk outside and find herself home? How was Meissa in her home? Why was she shivering so much? Wasn't she supposed to have changed her clothes already?
It was true - her whole body was trembling and shuddering something awful. She hadn't noticed, but her teeth were also chattering as well. Jumping into the ocean and nearly drowning twice in one day could very possibly have been the reason for that. Meissa's magic trick earlier had done a so-so job of drying her off, but her clothes were still fairly cold and damp.
"... another witch... needs us..."
Mira felt a cold shudder run down her back as her focus resumed on Meissa's words. Another witch? Another one of those horrible creatures was here in town? That wasn't good. And here she was, freaking out about the layout of a bedroom she had spent all of two minutes in, still wearing soaking-wet clothes. "Ahh... Um... Ok-k-kay. Just, umm, g-g-give me a... m-m-minut-t-te to f-f-finish... ch-changing clothes," Mira stammered as best she could through chattering teeth.
A minute or two later, the door swung open and out stepped Mira into the hallway, wearing white stockings and a simple, long, pale yellow gown. She had very quickly braided her hair and tied it back with a ribbon, but many loose strands were poking out here and there. She had a pair of boots in one hand, and with the other she pulled the door shut. As she yanked her boots up, she tried to give Meissa what she hoped was an enthusiastic smile. "So, um... you said there's another witch? Where is it? And, um... that means we have to fight it, right?"
A rustle in the bushes ahead was enough to make Maaz instantly transform, dropping back into a defensive posture with both of her guns drawn and aimed dead ahead of her. What she saw made her frown in apprehension - definitely another magical girl. It was not the crazy ice girl from earlier, at least, but a second new magical girl on their island in the same day? What was happening? This girl was strange looking. For starters, she was... old. Several years older than Maaz, by the looks of it. That really made Maaz frown. She had never met a magical girl older than herself. She didn't know that magical girls could be... old. Why was that, she suddenly wondered?
There was no time for her to spend too much time pondering this thought over, though, as suddenly the new magical girl grabbed hold of the cursed woman. Some kind of magic transpired between them, and just as suddenly the woman was making a break for it back to town. Perking an eyebrow, Maaz watched in silence as the other magical girl approached her. Her magic felt strong. Confident. She carried herself like a veteran. She waisted no time with small talk, either. This was something Maaz could respect.
Holstering her guns, Maaz gave Marie a nod. "Maaz Montillo. Buenas tardes, señorita. You been tracking this witch, eh? Must be strong if it has already started pulling in prey from the city. Solo mi suerte." Maaz gestured to the girl's soul gem. "Have you seen Kyubey anywhere? Nice of him to tell me we have so much company on our pequeña isla today, yeah? That little runt is usually good at strategy. So is Meissa, if she ever gets here," she mumbled under her breath.
Meissa paced the hallway restlessly as Mira changed, anxiously, glancing off at one of the high windows, as if she could catch a glimpse of Maaz and whoever this new girl might be, fighting the latest of those horrifying monsters. She could spot the imposing stone tower of the prison itself, jutting out savagely from the center of the city, but from this distance any people were impossible to make out, and even if they hadn’t been, the battle would mercifully not be fought out on the city streets themselves, but in the darkness of the witch’s labyrinth.
After a dozen or so laps down the hallway at an increasingly frantic pace, the door finally opened. Meissa swept over to her, half ushering half pushing her towards the exit. Every second was precious, and the anxiety of leaving Maaz alone by a labyrinth was starting to get to her. “yes yes, we must, Maaz is already there,” she paused, looking for a moment carefully into Mira’s face. “Are you certain you’re okay? Ready for another fight?” she said, already biting her lip in thought. The more hands on deck, the better, and it wasn’t like four magical girls were all that many, against the ceaseless onslaughts of witches in the islands. And yet…Mira was still new, still adjusting to…well, everything. Life as a magical girl, life in the Caribbean entirely, the deaths of her entire family. She needed time. But time was a luxury that no magical girl had, and surely it wouldn’t be fair to Maaz, who could already be in who knew how much pain.
Marie hardly seemed to even notice Maaz’s momentary hostility, and did nothing to acknowledge the girl’s drawn guns, nor when they were holstered. She turned over her shoulder, to glare at the gate. “Yes, it must be quite the foe,” she said plainly. At Maaz’s mention of Kyubey Marie turned sharply, scanning the road and rooves behind her for the little creature. “I wouldn’t put much stock in him showing up, we aren’t on the best of terms,” she said. One of her arms shot outwards, and grabbed a long spear out of thin air. “So, we wait for your comrade,” she said, with a nod. “And keep everyone else out of the labyrinth. It’s gotten plenty big enough to be a challenge for three.”
((Pfft, what, I didn't forget about this roleplay, nope, not me~))
Mira forced herself to smile as Meissa looked her over. It wasn't very convincing. "Oh! Well, um, you know, as fine as can be, all things considered," she lied as she finished putting on the pair of borrowed boots while the other girl practically dragged her towards the door. At least with a warm, dry set of clothes on, she felt a bit better than she had upon entering the very strange and very magical house. Perhaps getting out of the very strange and very magical house would do her some good. Yes, that was exactly the thing to do. She would shove what she had seen inside of that room as far back into her mind as she could and focus on the task at hand. There it would stay, along with the memories of what had happened to her... goodness, had it really been just that morning? No. No time to think about it now. She would keep those memories secure under lock and key for another time.
"I guess I have to learn how to fight one way or another, right? No better way to do it than to just, well, get right to it," she said, hoping that she sounded more confident than she felt. Maybe this witch wouldn't be as scary as the one they had faced earlier. Still wearing her forced smile, she gestured to Meissa. "We, um, better get going then, right?"
Maaz grinned a bit as the new girl shared that she and Kyubey were not on the best terms. "A girl after my own heart," she chuckled. "So, you said the entrance to the labyrinth is just ahead past the first prison gate? And you said that this witch is already so big that it requires more than one or two of us to take it on, aye?" At this, she frowned and gave Marie a perplexed look. "Just how long you been watching this thing, chica?"
