Sirona’s maternal eyes widened. Selena had a child in her coils. One that would grow from a myth amongst the python’s kind to a legend of the jungle. She sniffed the slumbering young Ryan, finally recognising the scent that she was following earlier.
"You have my word, Selena. I’ll take this child to the pack and protect him with my life." The wolf promised.

Selena unraveled her coils and placed the sleeping Ryan on the wolf's back.
"Thank you, Sirona," the snake said.

With the snoozing Ryan slumped across the wolf’s back, Sirona looked to the teal coloured snake with a respectful nod. "May fate be kind to you, the boy and the jungle.” She said wisely, disappearing into the darkness of the undergrowth, guided by the silvery moonlight.
That was the last time that the child and the python saw one another. But their encounter did not end there. As the years passed, Ryan began to understand the pack’s social structure and hierarchy. He grew from a lost and scared boy to a young and responsible teenager while being taught how to hunt and how to survive. All under the watchful eye of Sirona, her partner Shadow, and their extended brothers and sisters.
By the time Ryan had turned 16, he was maturing and becoming more and more liked by the pack. One day, he decided to wander off.

Over time Selena just went about life like any other snake and for a while, she even traveled to different parts of the jungle. Sadly, time made her somewhat forget about the little man-cub she found long ago, she didn't even learn his name that night. The snake thought of him sometimes sure, but she was certain that Sirona did the right thing and helped him find a home.
When Selena returned to her original place in the jungle, she heard about a man-cub named Ryan who was living in a wolf pack. The snake was lying in a tree one day when she spotted the young man-cub passing by. Selena would have never recognized this strapping lad as the same one she saved. The snake was too shy to approach him just yet, that knife he was holding look very intimidating. So Selena watched him and when he wasn't around she heard stories of his adventure through the birds and monkeys.

Time had also changed Ryan’s clothing as he transitioned into a red loincloth following that fateful night. He had also developed a very intense workout schedule away from hunting and defending the pack. Days of swimming, chin-ups, push-ups and sit-ups had seen his young teenage body slowly develop the trim and toned frame he would become famous for. The knife he carried was given to him after an incident with a poacher that tried to harm one of Sirona’s sisters, to which he uses to defend himself from hungry predators.
As he walked through the jungle, he paused to admire his surroundings, in no immediate danger.

Back to the present...
"I'm ashamed to admit that I had nearly forgotten the child after I heard about you," Selena said. "I just assumed Sirona raised the boy for a while and then took him to a man village. I never would have guessed that you and he were one and the same."

This revelation hit Ryan like a ton of bricks - Selena was the snake that found him that fateful night! "It.... it was you! You were the snake that pulled me up into that tree when the plane crashed!" He said in surprise, looking at the pattern of teal and burgundy coils as Selena’s tail held him in mid-air.

Seeing him so surprized, Selena thought it best to let him go for now and so she let him slip from her coils.
"Yes, I was the same snake," Selena said.

Though he felt relieved as Selena let him slip from her coils and land safely on the branch in a seated position, legs either side, Ryan secretly loved the feel of her soft and smooth scales on his torso. "But why? Why did you save me?" He asked, hoping for a affirmative reason from the sweet-natured python.

Selena was taken aback at first but then she answered.
"I did it because I wanted to. You looked so scared and sad that I felt I had to do something as well. But at the same time, I knew I couldn't for I wasn't big or strong enough to protect you. I saved you because I cared."

Ryan looked away briefly, surprised by Selena’s admission that she saved him because she cared. The pain of being 8 years old and lost in the darkened jungle right after his parents died in a plane crash still burned strongly in the jungle boy’s heart, but he was mature enough to move on from the past and look forward to the future. A future with a new scaly love interest.
"Well, it’s been a long time since I’ve said thank you to anyone, but...." Ryan spoke, rising to his feet and walking towards Selena until they were eye to eye. He reached up his left hand to cup the python’s snout with his fingers.
"...Thank you." He smiled charmingly as his fingers gave the python a chin rub.

If it were physically possible for snakes to have goosebumps, Selena would certainly have some by the time Ryan cupped her head. She moves in a bit closer places her snout against the lad's forehead.
"Your welcome," Selena whispers.

As Ryan’s forehead and Selena’s snout touched, he could sense the growing attraction between him and the python. All those years spent with the wolves and learning how to survive had lead him back to Selena. Fate had been kind to him.
"If it weren’t for you, Selena, I wouldn’t be here now." He revealed, still rubbing her chin with his fingers.

Selena moved her head under Ryan's chin.
"I'm glad it worked out," she said closing her eyes and enjoying the touch of his warm skin against her face.

Ryan didn’t mind Selena moving her head underneath his chin. "Time heals all wounds. I know that to be true." He said softly, almost inviting the python to move the rest of her neck scales across the skin of his face and neck.
